Maltese government has announced the formation of a taskforce to develop a national AI strategy

Today, November 1st marks the day when the three acts that were enacted to launch Malta as the new blockchain hub go into effect, creating Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA) and the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). These authorities are now open for applications and registration of block-chain based contracts.

But that’s not all.

Malta wants itself to be in leading position in AI.

Joseph Muscat, Prime Minister of Malta, announced in the opening speech of Malta Blockchain Summit that he wanted Malta to be positioned in the centre of discussions about AI.

“It is because we are human that we ask certain questions. Sophia will address the summit this afternoon, but will there be a time when people will be invited to speak at a conference organised by robots? Will we one day build machines which will lead to our own extinction? I believe we are more intelligent than that. I want Malta to become a hub for AI innovation and for the regulation of new, intelligent technologies.”Joseph Muscat at Malta Blockchain Summit

Today, sitting side by side with Sophia, the world’s first humanoid, parliamentary secretary for the digital economy Schembri announced that such a pilot project will be looked into by the newly created task-force which has been appointed to propose a strategy on the regulation of AI.

The taskforce will be led by Wayne Grixti, an enterprise architect from MDIA, a new authority that has been entrusted with the regulation of the blockchain industry which will now be helping in the regulation of AI technology.

As reported by local media outlet, the task-force will also include AI lecturers and researchers Dylan Seychell and Prof. Alexiei Dingli, as well as MITA’s head of strategy Emanuel Darmanin, tech lawyer Jackie Mallia, and digital economy secretariat official Francois Piccione. The council will consult experts in the field of AI, including the creators of Sophia, the founder of Hanson Robotics, and Ben Goertzel, the chief scientist of Hanson Robotics and the founder of AI marketplace SingularityNET.

In the closing words, Prime minister Muscat stated that he and his team as well as the Innovation authorities are open to embrace new ideas and he is determined to work hard to make this project come true.

“We like to do things the right way and at the right pace, and our philosophy is to be honest brokers, where everyone knows where everyone stands. Let’s think big, and together we can make the next leap.”Joseph Muscat
